10 years and counting...I began making, restoring and experimenting with concertinas in 2010, around a day job as an architect, and since then have carried out a number of restorations and newly built hybrid instruments. My speciality is creating environmentally conscious instruments, without using traditional animal-based materials, such as leather and hide glue, and to bespoke designs. I also champion the use of the UKs native and native grown trees, avoiding the traditionally used exotics altogether.
Though I can provide instruments with high quality new Italian reeds, I predominantly reuse good quality accordion reeds salvaged from old instruments destined for the tip, or just a lifetime in the attic. By carefully cleaning, re-tuning and balancing the reeds I create instruments that are suitable for both beginners and more advanced players, and are able to hold their own in any session. I mostly make anglos but have created new and bespoke instruments of other systems too, plus non vegan ones. When customers request leather bellows these are usually by Peter O'Connor. In 2020 I launched a beginner instrument that is quick to build using laser cutting techniques. I am also developing a new hybrid concertina reed for use in future instruments. Please feel free to contact me with your requirements. Feedback for Flying Duck Concertinas:
" This instrument is wonderful, beautiful construction , very cool design good tone and surprisingly responsive for a Baritone. Having this instrument built has been a most enjoyable journey from the initial design discussions to completion"Martin White (Martin White Mandolins), on a custom build
"For the price, this is a stunning instrument, very playable and with a pleasing tone. I would actually go as far as to say that I prefer it to some instruments that I’ve played priced at over £1000...
