I am a concertina maker based in South London, UK. My home and workshop is surrounded by the lush environs of the upper reaches of the River Wandle, and is home to many ducks. I often salute them as they fly past. Their frantically flapping wings resemble concertina reeds.
Some time ago, the odd concertina was made with a duck call incorporated, along with a bell, as a special effect. Nowadays the demand for this is curiously absent, but it is more proof that ducks and concertinas have enjoyed a long and illustrious history.
No ducks, or other animals, were harmed in the making of my vegan instruments. Over the years I have developed alternative methods and materials to use in the place of those traditional. With avoidance of leather and my use of reclaimed reeds, and native grown, locally sourced timber, my instruments contribute in their own small way to keeping the planet nice for humans and ducks alike.
